    1. Edward's scissor hands prevents him from doing certain everyday things that make people 'normal' like how the scarlet letter prevents Hester from bring 'normal'.

    2. The lady condemns Edward of being from hell just like how the the men condemn Pearl of being from hell.

    3. The neighbor lady and Hibbens.

    4. Scissor hands prevent love just like how scarlet letter prevents love.

    5. Love looked down upon by society.

    6. Jim tricks Edward just like how Chillingworth tricks Dimmesdale.

    7. Hester used the scarlet letter for good and helps people just like how Edward uses his hands for good and also helps people.

    8. Both couples are not allowed to be together because Edwards saves Kim's brother but still gets into trouble, and Dimmesdale dies after confessing his sin. Die through good-doing.

    9. As they become more love-sick, both Edward and Dimmesdale act differently, Dimmesdale wants to tell people bad things and act out and Edward ruins the mirror and drapes and etc. out of anger.

    10. Hester wants to get rid of the letter to be normal just like how Edward would want to get rid of scissor hands to become normal.

  3. 1) Edward lives by himself far away from others in the town just as Hester lives in a cottage in the woods.
    2) Edward has a special talent of cutting hair just as Hester is very skilled at needlepoint.
    3) Both Edward and Hester possess something that frightens others; Edward has scissors for hands while Hester wears the Scarlet A on her chest.
    4) People of the town gather to see both of these people; when Edward comes down, everyone rushes to see him and when Hester is on the scaffold, it is a almost a social gathering to watch her.
    5) Both Edward and Hester are accused of being evil; a woman says that Edward is from hell and trying to carry out the work of Satan while many people in the town believe that Hester is a bad example to her daughter because she is evil too.
    6) Edward does not tell a secret (that it was Jim's idea to break into the house) because of Kim, a girl he is deeply mesmerized by, just as Hester does not tell that Dimmesdale is the father of her child because she loves him.
    7) Both Edward and Hester love someone they cannot be with.
    8) Jim is jealous of Edward and is always trying to keep him away from Kim, just as the jealous Chillingworth is always trying to slowly weaken Dimmesdale.
    9) Both Edward and Hester are very disconnected from society. They are both alone in the world without a family.
    10) Edward and Kim share a kiss before Edward "dies" just as Hester and Dimmesdale share a kiss before Dimmesdale dies. When they feel like they are finally going to get to be together, they realize it is impossible.

  4. 1. The lady who played the piano and was very “holy” and weird and Chilling worth are similar in was such as that they both tried to keep people away from the main characters. Chilling worth tried to make it seem like Pearl was evil and that lady tried to make it seem like Edward was evil.
    2. There a somewhat sense of forbidden love in both. Hester and Dimmsdale could not be together and later on neither could Kim and Edward.
    3. Edward and Hester where both considered the outcasts of society.
    4. Edward and Hester both tried to do things that they thought where right but then they where looked at as evil. For example when Edward tried save the little boy and ended up cutting his face and the passion that Dimmsdale and Hester shared.
    5. Edwards hands and Heaters letter both made them stand out from the rest of society.
    6. At a point Edward becomes like Chilling worth when he wants revenge on Jim for deceiving him and Jim ends up dying.
    7. The very skinny lady in the beginning of the movie and Mrs. Robinson both are like witches, they both promote evil in the town.
    8. The skinny lady in the beginning is like Chilling worth in a sense that she makes everyone think that he is evil and Chillingworth makes everyone think that Pearl is evil.
    9. The way that Hester protects Pearl is kind of like how the lady who brought Edward into her home. They are always trying to protect there children no matter what evil they may posses.
    10. Hester and Edward both do things in the heat of the moment that have great consequences like when Hester and Dimesdale get together and when Edward kills Jim.

    1. After Edward's arrival to Peg's house, the women of the neighborhood stand on the corner gossiping. This is similar to when Hester is coming out of jail to stand on the scaffold.
    2. At the dinner table, Kevin stares at Edward and his abnormalities. While standing on the scaffold, Hester has a huge audience of onlookers.
    3. I saw a parallel between the woman in Edward Scissorhands saying "Power of Satan!" in relation to Edward's being, and the "Stern faced woman" from Scarlet Letter, whose opinions of Hester were not held back.
    4. During Edward's talk show appearance, Peg has reason to interject and say that Edward will always be "special." This is similar to Hester's scarlet letter on her chest, something that will always make her stand out, and be special.
    5. The suburban neighborhood with the pastel colors and husbands who all arrive home from work at the same time is similar to the Puritan community described in The Scarlet Letter in that each community is after perfection.
    6. Edward's home on the outskirts of civilization is similar to Hester's home that was tucked away in the woods.
    7. Although Edward has something that makes him obviously different, his talents are many. He is incredibly talented with his scissors, just as Hester is with her needlework.
    8. Hester and Dimmesdale plan to run away together once their secret is made known to society. Edward runs back home once the town decides he is not fit for their society.
    9. Although Edward came for a time to Suburbia and made his home in Peg's house, eventually he returned to the place he was truly comfortable, his house on the hill. Hester moved for a short time after Dimmesdale's death, but was said to have returned a few years later.
    10. The neighborhood barbecue could be considered similar to Hester's stand on the scaffold -- allowing the whole community to get a view of the individual in the spotlight.

  6. 1. All of the neighbors talking in the beginning of the movie about Peg’s new guest; all of the townspeople in the beginning of the novel were gossiping about Hester.

    2. The woman who claims Edward is from hell; Hester and Pearl are slandered as being associated with the devil.

    3. He gets attention only because of his hands; he would be like anyone else if he had regular hands. Hester would be like anyone else if she did not have her letter.

    4. The neighborhood gathered in front of the castle at the end of the movie is a visual parallel to the beginning of the novel where the townspeople are gathered outside of the prison.

    5. Edward is a social outcast; Hester is a social outcast.

    6. Kim cannot be with Edward because of Jim’s actions; Chillingworth works to keep Hester and Dimmesdale apart.

    7. Society would not accept nor attempt to understand the relationship between Edward and Kim, much like Hester and Dimmesdale.

    8. What Edward is and how society sees him threatens to tear him apart; Dimmesdale is tortured by his actions and love.

    9. Edward escapes his tormentors by going back to live in the castle; Hester and Pearl merely leave the town.

    10. Kim and Edward can only be themselves with each other when they are away from the town in the castle or in the house alone. Hester and Dimmesdale only freely talk of their love and their feelings for each other when they are in the forest away from the townspeople.

  7. Similarities between Edward Scissorhands and The Scarlet Letter:
1.Both Edward and Hester do things to help others. Edward cuts hedges, dog’s hair, people’s hair, and even trims an ice sculpture for people at no cost. Hester makes clothing for the poor. They are both very generous.
    2. Both Edward and Hester are set apart from the rest of society. Hester is always looked at when she walks by on the street, and was forced to stand on the scaffold. Edward was brought to show and tell, and on a TV program. Both Edward and Hester, are kind of put on show for the rest of society, at one point.
    3. Both Hester and Kim find love but then have it taken away from them. Hester falls in love with Dimmesdale only to have society prevent them from being together, and eventually Dimmesdale dies. Kim finds love in Edward, and then society keeps them apart because she has to say he died to calm down all her neighbors.
    4. The prison in The Scarlet Letter appears ugly from far away, just as Edward’s house does. However, once you go closer to Edward’s house you see the beautiful garden, and once you get closer to the prison you see a beautiful rosebush.
    5. Both Hester and Edward are originally accepted into the society. However, they are both rejected by society after they make one mistake. Hester was a part of society until she committed adultery, at which time she became an outcast. Edward is accepted in society, until he breaks into Jim’s house, at which point society begins to make up rumors about how he raped someone and is a bad person.
    6. Kim’s boyfriend Jim is like Chillingworth, because while they both have different intentions, they are both antagonizing and trying to torture Dimmesdale and Edward.
    7. The woman who accuses Edward of raping her is like the leader of the other gossipy women, just like there is one lady outside the prison in The Scarlet Letter who kind of leads in the accusation of Hester.
    8. Dimmesdale is kind of like the Avon woman who took Edward in because in the beginning Dimmesdale is the only one who feels sorry for Hester’s current situation, while the Avon woman is the only one who feels bad enough about Edward’s situation to invite him to live with her and her family. Both Dimmesdale and the Avon woman show kindness to people, most of society would not notice.
    9. Edward’s hat with the red “V” when he robs Jim’s house is like Hester’s “A.”
    10. Both Edward and Hester live far from society.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1.Dimmesdale and Hester’s love is looked down upon by society and so are Edward’s and Kim’s.
2.Dimmesdale and Edward are at first seen as men or characters of high praise and well liked by the community.
3.Jim sabotages and tricks Edward as Chillingworth sabotaged and tricked Dimmesdale.
4.Hester and Dimmesdale are marked with the shame of the Scarlet Letter; Edward is marked with scissors as hands.
5.Both Dimmesdale and Edward experience change in the personas, Dimmesdale because sickly, Edward acts out.
6.The stories both share a tragic ending, neither of the couples can ever be together.
7.Edward is willing to do anything for Kim, and Dimmesdale was always willing to stand up for Hester.
8.Gossip was a major key factor in both towns
9.The mom acts as Edward’s Pearl; she almost never leaves his side.
    10. Both of the bad guys are defeated in the end.

  9. Ten parallels that I see between the film EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and THE SCARLET LETTER include
"The sign of Satan"; for Edward his hands represent the sign and for Hester the letter itself represents Satan.
The housewives resemble the towns people, they are always judging Edward just like in The Scarlet Letter when the townspeople judged Hester.
Kim represents Dimmesdale because she hides her true feelings.
Jim represents Chillingworth because he is out to destroy.
The cutting of the bushes and hair portray Hester’s job as a tailor and how all the people in the town came to her for nice clothing.
Hester and Edward are both hiding, Hester in her seaside cottage and Edward in his lonely castle.
Bob and Peg’s family represents Hester and Pearl and how they were outcasts
Edwards Castle represents the jail and the beauty of the garden represents the rosebush.
Peg’s neighbor is like Mrs. Hibbin’s she tempts Edward into doing bad things.
Kim’s defending of Edward in front of the house represents the third scaffold scene.

    1. The people of Edwards’ town are bored they have nothing to amuse themselves. When he is brought down from his home the women gossip and whisper. The same with Hester, the people looked at her on the scaffold and whispered and gossiped about what they thought happened.
    2. The lady that plays the organ from the beginning of the story accuses Edward as being from Satan. Chillingworth accuses Pearl as being the baby of Satan. When they both have no real evidence of neither being from Satan.
    3. Edwards’ services far as cutting dogs and human hair can be compared to Hester’s. The towns’ people lined up to get their dogs groomed by Edward. In Hesters town they were awaiting for her great sewing skills.
    4. At first people gossip about Edward wondering what is wrong with him, and then after they get to know Edward they begin to like him. Same as for Hester she used to walk around with her head down afraid to speak to people. As the book progresses she becomes some of the towns people favorite.
    5. Kim cares greatly for Edward. She does not want to see him hurting or for anyone to hurt him. The scene where they force Edward to break into the home, Kim was scared to say anything to Jim. The same as Dimmesdale still took up for Hester but was nervous the same time.
    6. The Avon lady wants to make Edward feel at home just as Dimmesdale wants to make Hester feel comfortable when they meet in the forest.
    7. Jim is like Chillingworth. Jim thinks that what he says is always correct. As Chillingworth does when he is talking to Dimmesdale at the end asking him what is wrong with him, he wants to know why he is confessing.
    8. Edward and Pearl are the same. They both hold their feelings in.
    9. At the end of the book Dimmesdale dies leaving Hester to raise Pearl alone. The same as Kim tells the towns people that Edward has been killed by Jim, which leaves her alone.
    10. Edward lives in a home all alone at the top of the hill away from others. Hester lives in her house all alone.
    11. People both seem to be nice to both Hester and Edward then they turn on them when they are not happy with their choice.

    1) Edward has frequent flashbacks to when the professor was alive - this reminds me of the repeating of the scaffold scene
    2) Edward reminded me a lot of Dimmesdale because of his popularity amongst the neighbords like how Dimmesdale was popular because of his sermons
    3) Dimmesdale shares many qualities with Edward, such as being all alone and "incomplete" in a way and hiding something
    4) Jim is a lto like Chillingworth in the sense that he is out for revenge on Edward and dies once Edward's situation is "better'
    5) It's pretty obvious that Edward and Kim are paralled to Dimmesdale and Hester - they have a secret love affair going on
    6) On the night Edward got into trouble, he and Kim meet in the night, like Dimmesdale and Hester are forced to do
    7) Edward's scissorhands could be seen as his "scarlet letter" even though he didn't do anything wrong
    8) Dimmesdale had such a skill for giving oving sermons, and Edward had a nack for giving hair cuts and cutting shrubs
    9) The one neighbor who always flirted with Edward could be seen as the temptation Dimmesdale faced daily to tell the truth
    10) When the professor was giving Edward lessons, it reminded me of how Chillingworth tried to "help" Dimmesdale, but it really hurt him
    11) When the dog gives Edward a lick on the cheek, it paralles to when Pearl gave Dimmesdale a kiss on the lips
    12) Mrs. Hibbins can definitely be paralled to the "witch lady" who plays the organ and is afraid of the devil in "Edward Scissorhands"

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1) Conflict of interest between Edward/Kim and Dimmesdale/Hester being together because of a significant other.

    2) Hester/Edward being ostracized at first, but slowly accepted into the community. Edward's leathery-like body symbolises him as an outcast like the scarlet letter labeled Hester unwelcomed in the community of the purists

    3) The townspeople having a 'mob mentality' outlook.

    4) Hester and Kim never seeing the man they love again, after the climax hits.

    5) Both towns are a close-knit community, that is easily rocked by any sort of scandal and have have gossipy women who pretend to be so righteous and moral, but really have sinned themselves..

    6) Both Kim and Hester are perceived as beautiful, and are secretive about their feelings for Edward and Dimmesdale.

    7) They both have a crazy lady; Mrs. Hibbons is the crazy witch lady in Scarlet Letter, and that one super-religious lady in the neighborhood, represent the extremes of belief and non-belief.

    8) Edward, like Pearl, doesn't have an active father in their life. Edward has his creator which dies, and Dimmesdale is secretive about Pearl's paternity.

    1. First parallel is Edward and Hester. They are both outcastes from the society.
    2. Second parallel is the scarlet letter itself and the scissors. They are both symbols and marks on Edward and Hester that difference between them and the rest of the people.
    3. Third parallel is Jim and Chillingworth. They both use others for their own advantages. Jim uses Kim and Edward and Chillingworth uses Hester and Dimmesdale.
    4. Fourth parallel is the societies in each. They are both at sometime or another very judgmental of Hester and Edward.

    9. Ninth parallel is Edward’s house is dark, scary, gloomy, and frightening, but has one place where the sun shines in. The prison is all of those things as well, but has the rose bush.
    10. Tenth parallel is Edward and Hester were both outcasts but had talents that brought them to be semi accepted by society. Hester’s needlepoint and Edwards hair cutting and bush trimming.

1.) Edward gets caught stealing from Jim’s house and becomes an outcast, but Kim doesn’t confess that she was also a part of this crime and she feels guilty about it. This parallels to The Scarlet Letter because Hester is punished for her sin of adultery, but her partner, Reverend Dimmesdale, is not.
2.) Edward and Hester were both talented with their hands: Edward was crafty with his scissors and Hester was good at needlework.
3.) The crazy religious-fanatic neighbor in the movie parallels Mistress Hibbins and the religious-fanatic members of society who condemned Hester for her sin.
4.) There are town gossips in Scarlet Letter and in Edward Scissorhands, all of whom are girls.
5.) There are two escape plans: In The Scarlet Letter, Hester and Reverend Dimmesdale plan to take a boat to another country, and in the movie Kim tells Edward to run.
6.) At the end of both the novel and the movie, the two main characters are separated. In The Scarlet Letter Dimmesdale dies, and in the movie Kim tells everyone that Edward is dead and they never see each other again.
7.) Pearl can be seen as the little girl at the beginning and end of the movie who is asking her grandmother about where snow comes from. Pearl always asked Hester what the scarlet “A” meant.
8.) Hester is a beautiful woman who cheats on Chillingworth for the more sensitive Dimmesdale, and Kim is a beautiful girl who leaves Jim for the more sensitive Edward.
9.) Chillingworth plans revenge on Dimmesdale for having an affair with his wife, and Jim tries to kill Edward for stealing his girlfriend.
10.) Both Hester and Edward are forced to live on the outsides of town in seclusion from the rest of society because the townspeople feel threatened by both presences in both instances.

    9. When Edward goes back to live up on the hill at the end of the movie because he doesn’t belong and it is safer for him, it is like Hester when she moves away to the Carolina’s at the end of the story because it is better for her to be away from the townspeople.
    10. Edward would fit in more if he didn’t have scissorhands, just like Hester would be accepted by others if she didn’t have the Scarlet Letter or didn’t commit adultery.

3)Edward’s scissors mark him as “unnatural” just as the “A” Hester wears marks her as being not normal as well.

10)Edward’s home is away from society and he goes their for safety and comfort, just as Hester and Pearl regard their house (which is by the forest and also away from society) as a safe haven and a place they can call their own.

4)Both Jim and Chillingworth (the “bad guys”) die in the end.

  32. 1. Hester's scarlet letter is comparable to Edward's hands- both mark the bearer with a stigma that makes it easy for others to judge them.
    2. Jim's frequent antagonizing of Edward parallels Chillingworth's psychological torture of Dimmesdale.
    3. The gossipy, judgmental women neighbors of the suburban town in Edward Scissorhands are similar to the gossipy, judgemental women who look down on Hester Prynn.
    4. Although Edward is initially seen as strange, people after time respect him for his work as a hairdresser and landscaper. Similarly, Hester Prynn is admired for her skill as a seamstress.
    5. Although both Hester and Edward are judged and treated badly by those around them, they both continue to live out their lives in relative seclusion, Hester in her cottage on the outskirts of town, Edward in his mansion outside the suburbs.
    6. Esmerelda and Mistress Hibbins are both fanatics of some sort, coming in and out of the story with their crazy ramblings.
    7. Hester's 3 hours on the scaffold are similar to Edwards's time at the neighborhood barbecue: both were put in front of the public to be judged.
    8. The suburb in Edward Scissorhands and the town in The Scarlet Letter are both superficially "perfect", but underneath this facade, there is sin and imperfection.
    9. Jim and Chillingworth both die in the end, when the their energies can longer be used to torture their victims.

    4. They are both publicly scrutinized at some point in the plot.
    5. Edward and Kim love each other, and Hester and Dimmesdale love each other, but eventually have to part.
    6. The women gather in both the beginning of the story and movie, and at the end, of the story and movie.
    7. Jim taunts Edward, making Jim parallel to Chillingworth, and Edward parallel to Dimmesdale, because in the story Chillingworth tautns Dimmesdale.
    8. The scene of the barbeque is similar to the scaffolding scene because all of the attention is on both Edward, and Hester.
    9. When Edward does not tell that Jim and Kim put him up to the break in, it parallels Hester keeping the secret of who the father is, Dimmesdale.
    10. Both the village and the Suburban neighborhood appear perfect and uniform, but in both the movie and the book, they all have their underlying problems.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1. Hester's scarlet A makes her different just like Edward's scissor hands make him different. They signal them out. They seem like nice regular people till you either see Edwards scissor hand or Hester's A on her chest, then people make the assumption that they're not.

    2. Edward house seems like the jail house. Both the house and the jail house seems horrible on the outside but the house has a beautiful garden and the jail house has the rosebushes. Edward's house can also be like Hester's because both are outside the neighborhood.

    3. Jim is like Chillingworth. Both lose the love of the person they supposedly love. After they know they have lost that love they try to get back at the person who they think took it away. In this case, Jim with Edward and Chillingworth with Dimesdale. Both try to blame someone. In the end, their ambition ends up killing them because once they see Edward and Dimmesdale free from them, they have no one else's pain and suffering to feed on.

    4. Hester works at a seamstress and she is really good at it. Edward turns out to be good at cutting hair, grooming dogs, etc. They both are good at what they do and people like them when they are working for them. Once they don't need them they are out casted again.

5.Both Hester and Kim end up losing the guy they love. After they realize that love and finally have the chance to enjoy, they get that taken away. Hester's love dies and for Kim Edward has to go back his castle.

    6. The crazy neighbor lady and the women accusing Hester are parallels. Both in their situation point fingers when they are not innocent themselves. Another similarity is that both are making it harder on themselves with this accusation. The woman are letting themselves and other females down by not sticking together. The crazy lady is an outcast like Edward but she thinks the worst without knowing.

    7. In the movie the wives gathered on the street corners to see who Edward was. They also start gossiping and talking on the phone about him. This can be compared to how the people in Hester'stown talk about her and point fingers.

    8. The barbeque in the moovie is parallel to Hester standing on the scaffold. Everyone gathers at the barbeque to look at Edward just like everyone in the town goes to see Hester stand on the scaffold.

    9. In the Scarlet letter everyone just notices Hester's sin. In the movie everyone sees Edward as different without thinking that they are different also. Since they are only looking at their mistakes, when booth commit a mistake or a sin and then are punish in the worst way and looked down on.

    10. Edward hides what actually happened at Jim's house to protect Kim. Hester hides the identity of Pearl father so Dimmesdale won't get in trouble. They are similar because both lie to protect the person they love.

    1. Both Hester and Edward are seen as social outcasts.

    2. Roger Chillingworth and Jim are similar because they both seek revenge on the man who steals their love away from them. Roger Chillingworth seeks revenge on Dimmesdale while Jim seeks revenge on Edward.

    3. Edward is like Dimmesdale because they are both unknowingly being tricked by their enemies into things that aren't good for them. Dimmesdale is tricked into a friendship with Roger Chillingworth who is secretly getting revenge on him. Edward is tricked into helping Jim break into his house and he gets in trouble for it.

    4. Edward is like Pearl. Pearl is a young child and therefore displays innocence. Edward has had no human interaction for most of his life,so he doesn't know right from wrong, and is therefore like an innocent child.

    5. The talk show with Edward is similar to when Hester is on the scaffold. When she is on the scaffold, she is being asked questions, especially about who the father of her baby is, and she refuses to answer. Edward is asked many questions, such as whether he has a girlfriend. He takes the time to think about whether or not to answer, but he never does.

    6. Hester and Edward both possess special talents that gain them business from many people even though they are outcasts. Hester has the talent of fine needlework, which causes many people to ask for her to make gloves, scarves, etc. for them, whereas Edward has the ability to trim bushes into neat animals and give haircuts to people and dogs. His talent makes people desire for him to work for them.

    7. Hester and Edward both have a mark that shows others that they are different. Hester's mark is her scarlet letter, which tells others that she is an adulteress. Edward's is his hands, which are made of razor blades, and therefore let others know that he is not like other people.

    8. In both Edward Scissorhands and The Scarlet Letter, there is gossip from the townspeople and neighbors that continually goes on about the main characters from each story.

    9. The ends of the stories are similar because Kim and Hester need to realize what is best for the men they love and need to accept it. When Dimmesdale dies, Hester learns that she needs to let him go because he is released from his suffering, and is therefore happier than he would be still living. Although Kim loves Edward, she needs to leave him in order to save him and allow him to be happy because he would no longer be around society's ridicule anymore.

    10. Like Dimmesdale and Hester's forbidden love, Kim and Edward's love is forbidden as well. Because Hester is technically married, she cannot have any relationship with Dimmesdale according to society. Likewise, Kim cannot stay with Edward because he is seen by society as dangerous, which prevents her to pursue any further relations with him.

    3. Edward and Kim hide the love they have for eachother like Dimmesdale and Hester hide their love for eachother throughout the novel

    4. Their are many feuds and disagreements between Edward and Jim similar to the feuds between Chillingworth and Dimmesdale

    5. At the neighborhood barbque everyone interrogates and watches Edward. This is similar to Hester on the scaffold when everyone is watching her.

    6. The townspeople in both Edward Sisscorhands and the Scarlet Letter cling to gossip and the lives of other people in the town.

    7. The Avon Lady and her family love Edward despite his differences, just like Pearl loves Hester despite the Scarlet Letter

    8. Edward's home is isolated and set away from the town just like Hester is isolated in the woods.

    9. Jim tricks an innocent Edward into breaking into his house just like Chillingworth tricks Dimmesdale. Both Dimmesdale and Edward do not expect to be tricked.

    10. Edward never tells anyone that Jim forced him to break into the house. He keeps it a secret. Dimmesdale keeps the secret of fathering Pearl throughout the entire novel.

1.)Both the Scarlett Letter and Edward Scissor hands have sympathy for the main character.

5.)Both Hester and Edward were treated differently by society and felt they had a disadvantage next to others at some point in their lives. Edward for his scissored hands and Hester for the embroidered S on her clothing that stands for her sin of committing adultery.
6.)Kim’s boyfriend Jim relates a lot to Roger Chillingworth’s character in his devious and jealous way of tricking Dimmesdale into his poor health, like how he tricked Edward into getting in trouble.
7.)Kim is a lot like Hester, when it came to her friends tricking Edward. She played along and didn’t say anything to warn Edward it was Jim’s house, like Hester didn’t tell Dimmesdale that Chillingworth was her husband when she knew he was subconsciously torturing him.
8.)The subdivision in the movie was very orderly and almost exactly the same, much like the small puritan town in The Scarlett Letter where everyone went along with life pretty much the same.

10.)Edward’s eyes are dark and he doesn’t really express his emotions or feelings throughout the movie at all like Hester, and how she keeps the secret of Dimmesdale being her husband throughout the novel.

  44. 1. There is a parallel between Edward and Hester. They both have outer flaws that all can see and judge them on.
    2. There is a parallel between the daughter's boyfriend and Riger Chillingworth. They both were vengeful and dwelled upon setting up the men that their women truly loved.
    3. There is a parallel between the Avon woman and Dimmesdale. They are both loving people that are a part of something that is looked down upon in society.

    4. There is a parallel between the daughter and Pearl. They both have a love and connection to people that society doesn't accept.

  50. Forgive me for jumping into this blog. I'm an English teacher as well (or was -- I'm now the principal), and every now and then I check the 'Net to see if anyone else has explored the connection between Edward Scissorhands and Hester Prynne. It's been central to my American Lit unit for a long time. Until today, I've had no luck.

Fortunately, I stumbled upon your blog, and I can't tell you how impressed I am! I applaud your students for their wonderful and insightful ideas.
